Positivity in Occupational Health and Safety
Walk onto most job sites and the safety conversation is a list of what not to do. Do not skip your PPE. Do not bypass the guard. Do not work without a permit. The message is real, but it is incomplete.
After 25 years in this industry, I am convinced that the crews with the strongest safety culture are the ones who get recognized for what they are doing well. Tailgate meetings that lead with a win. Toolbox talks that name people by name. Supervisors who notice a tied off harness before they notice an untucked shirt.
Positive reinforcement is not soft. It is strategic. People repeat what they are rewarded for. When the reward is being recognized as a professional, the entire site lifts.
That is the Flannery Safety difference, and it is the easiest change a company can make this week.
